The "good news" begins with the declaration and acknowledgment that all have fallen short of the glory of God. The doctrine of Total Depravity is too often skated past as a way to acknowledge the evil of this world and enjoy the goodness of God. In order to draw into a closer relationship with God, it is necessary that we spend time in the uncomfortable reality of our nature so that we could ultimately be comforted by God's great mercy.

God has revealed himself through His sovereign interventions throughout time which are perfectly preserved and recorded throughout Scripture, God's own testimony about Himself. As Ezra continues to pray confessing God's nature in Nehemiah 9, we consider how God has brought (and continues to bring) his people from affliction to provision.

As we move past the allegorical portion of the Armor of God that Paul describes in Ephesians chapter 6, it is important to note that verse 18 does not begin a new thought. Of all of the analogies that Paul has used, we see him describing the works of God in the life of a Christian. Truth as it applies to revelation, righteousness as it applies to imputation and mortification of sin, and readiness as it applies to redemption and reconciliation all point to the work of God. So do faith, which depends on God, and the Spirit which is literally God's leading (revelation). In verse 18, Paul doesn't use analogy because the act of prayer is not God's work but requires man's limited agency. Perhaps, the most important element to the whole armor of God is prayer.

In this second installment of our study of the Sword of the Spirit, Bro. Derrick explores the initiative of the Spirit to expose and reveal our human fallenness among brothers and sisters and Christ for His own glory. Additionally, we explore a simplified introduction of the Inspiritaiton of Scripture and a basic hermeneutic, that is an method of interpreting Scripture.
